IT'S FANTASTIC, FUN AND EDUCATIONAL TO WORK IN A MULTIDISCIPLINARY WAY, THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY DREAM! IN A TEAM OF COSMETIC DOCTORS, PLASTIC SURGEONS, SKIN THERAPISTS AND CONSULTANTS, WE WORK WITH OUR CLINIC MANAGER, FRONT AND BACK OFFICE OFFICE TO PROVIDE OPTIMAL CARE FOR OUR CLIENTS. '

What course did you follow and how was the ratio between medical and cosmetic skin therapy?

Seline: “I obtained a Bachelor Degree in Skin Therapy, which was a 4-year HBO course at The Hague University. In my opinion, the ratio between medical skin therapy and cosmetic skin therapy was not commensurate. I myself found that there was a little more focus (especially during the skills lessons) on electric epilation, bandaging, skin diseases and disorders and edema therapy. Laser, IPL treatments and other treatments that I do a lot now in practice, such as peels, connective tissue massage, HydraFacial, etc. were less discussed”.

You are now carrying out cosmetic treatments, is this in line with your course?

Seline: “The theory part is quite in line with the cosmetic treatments I'm doing now. Then I'm talking about basic knowledge, the general theory of the skin, general theory about certain acids for the skin, etc. Knowledge transfer specifically focused on the treatments I currently do, such as laser/IPL, connective tissue massage, HydraFacial, and peels, was less present. I only really learned this during internships. When I started at Van Lennep Clinic, the internal training courses on professional skin improvement products and the associated skin therapy treatments were very educational and in-depth for me. I also learn a lot because my skin therapy colleagues and our cosmetic doctor Dr. Ludy Holst transfer knowledge to each other and we discuss our successes and difficult cases with each other”.

What is your favorite treatment at the moment and did you gain knowledge about this during the course or learned more in practice?

Fleur: “My favorite treatment at the moment is the HydraFacial. During my training, I had already heard good stories about this treatment, but I really only learned how to implement it during my internship. The great thing about the HydraFacial is that it is a quick and effective treatment and that the result is immediately visible! This makes the treatment ideal for anyone who wants to have a nice glow from the skin quickly. In addition, the treatment is very nice to combine with other skin-improving treatments”.

Are there also treatments that you carry out that are reimbursed by the insurance?

Fleur: “There are a number of skin therapy treatments that I carry out that can be reimbursed by health insurance. For example, acne treatments and laser facial hair removal for women. Treating scars and removing facial skin imperfections also fall under insured care. Treatments that I use for this purpose include cryotherapy and micro-coagulation”.

How do you experience working with a cosmetic doctor?

Danielle: “It's nice that uncertainties surrounding a treatment/diagnosis can be discussed internally. In addition, it is a very nice and good addition to each other: together we can achieve much better results than alone”.

And do you ever treat one client together in one day?

Danielle: “It sometimes happens that a client visits both therapists one day. This does not happen very often because a skin therapist and doctor are not always present at the same location. In addition, it is not always possible to combine treatments with each other, this must be planned well in advance”.

How do you keep up to date with the latest developments in this field? I assume that you also need to take refresher courses for your profession?

Danielle:” I read the NVH newsletter, keep an eye on Social Media at various clinics and read the Dutch magazine for skin therapists. In addition, I take courses to maintain my quality, these courses mainly focus on aspects of treatment that I do not feel confident enough about at that time. To maintain the title “skin therapist”, 150 accreditation points must be achieved in 5 years”.

Are you a member of a professional association and/or another association such as the DALA?

Margot: “I am a member of the professional association of skin therapy; the NVH (Dutch Association of Skin Therapists). In addition, I am registered in the KP register to maintain and further develop my quality as a skin therapist”.

What is your ambition in the future, how would you like to grow?

Margot: “As a skin therapist, I would like to continue to develop and specialize. For example, by taking various courses that expand the range of treatment options. In addition, I think I have not stopped learning in the cosmetic industry and would find training as a Physician Assistant a great addition. This is mainly my ambition when it comes to treatment. A responsible position or extra responsibility for team skin therapy, for example, when it grows even more also seems very interesting to me”.
