Antioxidants, I'm sure you read and hear about this “word” more often. But what does this mean exactly? And why is this so important in health & skin? I'll explain briefly and firmly why antioxidants should be part of your daily skin routine.
Antioxidants come in various shapes and forms. One of the most well-known and also a very powerful antioxidant is vitamin C [1]. An antioxidant in a product that focuses on skin improvement first reduces skin damage caused by environmental factors, including UVA and UVB radiation, blue light, air pollution, and long-term infrared radiation. This includes skin cell damage that causes wrinkles, sagging and collagen loss, pigment damage, but also DNA damage to cells. The latter means that antioxidants can help protect against serious cell damage, such as the development of skin cancer cells. However, it is also important to use SPF, or sun protection, daily in combination with antioxidants. This way, you also give your sun protection product a boost, and you provide better UV protection by using antioxidants and a sun protection factor.
In addition to preventing skin damage in multiple areas, antioxidants also address all visible signs of damage, such as wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation and loss of firmness [2]. The antioxidants ensure that lines and wrinkles are softened, pigmentation is brightened, and firmness is improved by promoting collagen production.
All of the above happens when an antioxidant product that you've applied to your skin neutralizes free radicals. Free radicals are already naturally present in the skin, but you can also have too much of them, which can damage skin cells. This excess of free radicals can be caused by the aforementioned environmental factors. This means that an excess of cell degradation is stopped and brought into balance by such an antioxidant. In short: it limits excess skin cell damage.
By supplementing an antioxidant product with the right ingredients that, for example, target pigment or soften wrinkles, you also ensure visible skin improvement. Examples of these powerful ingredients are: “Floretine”, “Ferulic Acid” and “Alpha Tocopherol” (Vitamin E).
